Open letter to Robina Gokongwei
Robinsons Handyman Corporation
On Dec. 24, 2010, an employee at Robinsons Handyman at Robinsons Place Manila at Ermita Manila, didn't give priority to a Filipino senior citizen even after
said citizen showed to said employee his senior citizen card. Said employee was identified as Mary Joy Solomon. I believe said employee violated the Expanded Senior
Citizens Act of 2003. Said senior citizen bought, on said date, lithium batteries and was issued HANDYMAN Do It Best Home Center sales invoice No. 004951.
What,if any, are you going to do about said employee? I indicated on said invoice my street address.

Complaint vs. SM Supermarket Makati and Makati Mayor Jun Jun Binay
Said supermarket was identified as operated by Supervalue, Inc. East Drive SM Makati Bldg. Ayala Center San Lorenzo Village, Makati City. Said supermarket is covered
by Republic Act No. 9257. On November 17, 2010, I was at said store. I went through the entire customer area of said store, but there was no prominent display of
posters, stickers, and other notices that will generate public awareness of the rights and privileges of senior citizens.The sales invoice issued to me on said date
by an employee working at said store. bears the following: "SN: 56BJ900456".I believe the operator of said store violated said Act. Regarding Makati Mayor Jun Jun
Binay, who was identified as Vice-President Binay's son, Rule IX Article 11 of Republic Act No. 9257 contained the following statement: "It shall be the
responsibility of the municipality/city through the Mayor to require all establishments covered by the Act to prominently display posters, stickers, and other notices that will generate public awareness of the rights and privileges of senior citizens and to ensure that the provisions of the Act are implemented to its fullest." I believe said Jun Jun Binay has not ensured that the provisions of said Act were implemented to its fullest. I believe said Jun Jun Binay has not ensured that the provisions of said Act were implemented to its fullest.

On December 23, 2010, lax security at street entrance to Robinsons department store at Robinsons Place Manila. The two guards at said entrance didn't: inspect my luggage, subject said luggage to scanning with metal detector;
have a bomb sniffing dog smell said luggage. Said luggage was large enough to contain hand grenades. After entering said building I bought food from Wendy's restaurant and have proof of purchase.

NEWS from CPSC
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 17, 2010
Release #11-074 CPSC Recall Hotline: (800) 638-2772
CPSC Media Contact: (301) 504-7908
CPSC Approves Strong New Crib Safety Standards To Ensure a Safe Sleep for Babies and Toddlers

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously to approve new mandatory standards for full-size and non-full-size baby cribs as mandated by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). The federal crib standards had not been updated in nearly 30 years and these new rules are expected to usher in a safer generation of cribs.

Once they become effective, the mandatory crib standards will: (1) stop the manufacture and sale of dangerous, traditional drop-side cribs; (2) make mattress supports stronger; (3) make crib hardware more durable; and (4) make safety testing more rigorous.

CPSC has recalled more than 11 million dangerous cribs since 2007. Detaching drop-side rails were associated with at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths since 2000. Additional deaths have occurred due to faulty or defective hardware. These new standards aim to prevent these tragedies and keep children safe in their cribs.

Effective June 2011, cribs manufactured, sold, or leased in the United States must comply with the new federal standards. Effective 24 months after the rule is published, child care facilities, such as family child care homes and infant Head Start centers, and places of public accommodation, such as hotels and motels, must have compliant cribs in their facilities.

The full-size and non-full-size crib standards adopted the current ASTM International voluntary standards with additional technical modifications.

For more information on crib safety and safe sleep environments for baby, visit CPSC’s crib information center at: www.cpsc.gov/info/cribs/index.html

Evaluating Internet Health Information: A Tutorial from the National Library of Medicine
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/webeval/webeval.html

* This tutorial teaches you how to evaluate the health information that you find on the Web. It is about 16 minutes long.

* You need a Flash plug-in, version 8 or above, to view it. If you do not have Flash, you will be prompted to obtain a free download of the software before you start.

* The tutorial runs automatically, but you can also use the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen to go forward, backward, pause, or start over.

MedlinePlus Guide to Healthy Web Surfing
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/healthywebsurfing.html
What should you look for when evaluating the quality of health information on Web sites? Here are some suggestions based on our experience.

Consider the source--Use recognized authorities
Know who is responsible for the content.

* Look for an "about us" page. Check to see who runs the site: is it a branch of the Federal Government, a non-profit institution, a professional organization, a health system, a commercial organization or an individual.
* There is a big difference between a site that says, "I developed this site after my heart attack" and one that says, "This page on heart attack was developed by health professionals at the American Heart Association."
* Web sites should have a way to contact the organization or webmaster. If the site provides no contact information, or if you can't easily find out who runs the site, use caution.

Focus on quality--All Web sites are not created equal
Does the site have an editorial board? Is the information reviewed before it is posted?

* This information is often on the "about us" page, or it may be under the organization's mission statement, or part of the annual report.
* See if the board members are experts in the subject of the site. For example, a site on osteoporosis whose medical advisory board is composed of attorneys and accountants is not medically authoritative.
* Look for a description of the process of selecting or approving information on the site. It is usually in the "about us" section and may be called "editorial policy" or "selection policy" or "review policy."
* Sometimes the site will have information "about our writers" or "about our authors" instead of an editorial policy. Review this section to find out who has written the information.

Be a cyberskeptic--Quackery abounds on the Web
Does the site make health claims that seem too good to be true? Does the information use deliberately obscure, "scientific" sounding language? Does it promise quick, dramatic, miraculous results? Is this the only site making these claims?

* Beware of claims that one remedy will cure a variety of illnesses, that it is a "breakthrough," or that it relies on a "secret ingredient."
* Use caution if the site uses a sensational writing style (lots of exclamation points, for example.)
* A health Web site for consumers should use simple language, not technical jargon.
* Get a second opinion! Check more than one site.

Look for the evidence--Rely on medical research, not opinion
Does the site identify the author? Does it rely on testimonials?

* Look for the author of the information, either an individual or an organization. Good examples are "Written by Jane Smith, R.N.," or "Copyright 2003, American Cancer Society."
* If there are case histories or testimonials on the Web site, look for contact information such as an email address or telephone number. If the testimonials are anonymous or hard to track down ("Jane from California"), use caution.

Check for currency--Look for the latest information
Is the information current?

* Look for dates on documents. A document on coping with the loss of a loved one doesn't need to be current, but a document on the latest treatment of AIDS needs to be current.
* Click on a few links on the site. If there are a lot of broken links, the site may not be kept up-to-date.

Beware of bias--What is the purpose? Who is providing the funding?
Who pays for the site?

* Check to see if the site is supported by public funds, donations or by commercial advertising.
* Advertisements should be labeled. They should say "Advertisement" or "From our Sponsor."
* Look at a page on the site, and see if it is clear when content is coming from a non-commercial source and when an advertiser provides it. For example, if a page about treatment of depression recommends one drug by name, see if you can tell if the company that manufactures the drug provides that information. If it does, you should consult other sources to see what they say about the same drug.

Protect your privacy--Health information should be confidential
Does the site have a privacy policy and tell you what information they collect?

* There should be a link saying "Privacy" or "Privacy Policy." Read the privacy policy to see if your privacy is really being protected. For example, if the site says "We share information with companies that can provide you with useful products," then your information isn't private.
* If there is a registration form, notice what types of questions you must answer before you can view content. If you must provide personal information (such as name, address, date of birth, gender, mother's maiden name, credit card number) you should refer to their privacy policy to see what they can do with your information.

Consult with your health professional--Patient/provider partnerships lead to the best medical decisions.

advisory vs. SM Hypermarket
which was at SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. Security lapse at entrance to SM Hypermarket at SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. When I entered said store, security guard didn't inspect my luggage/didn't use a scanner on said luggage/didn't use a
bomb sniffing dog to smell said luggage. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades. Also, while I was inside said store, I went to different parts of said store, but there was no prominent display of information regarding the
privileges of/for senior citizens. I believe the management of said store violated the implementing rules and regulations of the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003. While I was in said store, I purchased several products and was issued a sales invoice numbered 00002243.

On December 12, 2010, the guard at P. Gil St. entrance to Robinsons Place Manila used a metal detector on my luggage. The metal detector didn't sound/didn't flash, even though the luggage contained scissors.After the guard used a metal
detector on my luggage, I went to the e-Phone Co., Inc. store in said building and purchased 3 SMART brand call cards and was issued a sales invoice no. 61953. Then, an employee working at said store. without my authorization, "loaded"
150 pesos worth of into my cellphone. Said person was identified as Jose Gazelle T. Francisco. He admitted his mistake but didn't compensate me for what he did

Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin C. Abalos, Jr.doesn't want the public to know?
That, Rule IX Article 11 of Republic Act No. 9257 contained the following statement: "It shall be the responsibility of the municipality/city through the Mayor to require all establishments covered by the Act to prominently display posters, stickers, and other notices that will generate public awareness of the rights and privileges of senior citizens and to ensure that the provisions of the Act are implemented to its fullest." That statement means that Mandaluyong Mayor
Benjamin C. Abalos, Jr. was and is required to require all establishments in Mandaluyong covered by said Act to prominently display posters, stickers, and other notices that will generate public awareness of the rights and privileges of senior citizens and to ensure that the provisions of the Act are implemented to its fullest. I have been to establishments in Mandaluyong that are covered by said Act but where the provisions of said Act were not implemented to its fullest.

SM Department store ignored customer's complaint?
On November 17, 2010, I submitted a written complaint to an employee at SM Department store at SM building in Ayala Center, Makati. Said complaint was regarding a defect in the men's CR in said store. Said employee was identified as a selling supervisor in said store. Up to December 17, 2010, no one from SM has provided me with a reply to said complaint.

advisory vs. Robinsons Place Manila
and McDonald's restaurant
Lax security on December 17, 2010 at entrance to Robinsons Place Manila. The guard at the Pedro Gil St. entrance to said building didn't: inspect my boots, use a
metal detector to scan said boots, use a bomb sniffing dog to smell said boots. Said boots were large enough to contain firearms. After entering said building,
I went to the McDonald's store. I bought food. While I was in said store, there was not prominently displayed, in the customer area of said store, information
regarding the privileges of/for senior citizens. I believe the management of said store violated the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003. Based on said Act, the
mayor of Manila, who was identified as Alfredo S. Lim, should have required said store to prominently display said information. In addition, the employee who served me didn't have displayed a health certificate at the proper location on the clothing she was wearing.

SM department store doesn't care about the safety of customers who go to said store?
On November 23, 2007, an employee, identified as Maria Fe Reyes, at SM department store, SM City Manila, received my written complaint vs. lax security at an entrance to said mall. Up to December 5, 2010, no one from SM has contacted me about said security lapse.

On December 6, 2010, I went to SM building at Ayala Center, Makati. I entered through the street entrance to the food court. The guard at said entrance didn't inspect my waist bag and boots. He also didn't use a metal detector. My bag and boots were large enough to contain firearms. While at said food court, there was a CR for women but no CR for men.While I was in said building, I went to Chow King restaurant and bought food. Proof of purchase is Chow King official receipt
No. 2602, There was no visible express lane for senior citizens and no prominent display of information regarding privileges of/for senior citizens. I believe said restaurant violated the implementing rules and regulations of the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003. Then, I went to the Park Square 1 building.The guard at said entrance didn't inspect my waist bag and boots. Then, I went to the Glorietta 5 building. The guard at the entrance to said building didn't inspect my waist bag and didn't inspect my boots.Said guard didn't use a metal detector to scan said bag and said boots.

Lead Hazards in Some Holiday Toys
http://www.cdc.gov/Features/LeadInToys/

Parents should be aware of potential lead hazards associated with some holiday toys and toy jewelry. Review these important facts to keep your loved ones safe this holiday season.
The holiday season is here, and that means many children will be given toys as gifts. While new toys are a holiday tradition, parents should be aware of potential lead hazards associated with toys, including toy jewelry. Review these important facts to keep your children safe this holiday season.

Lead is invisible to the naked eye and has no smell. Children may be exposed to it from consumer products through normal handling of the product. They often place toys and other objects, as well as their fingers that have touched these objects, in their mouth, which exposes them to lead paint or dust.

Lead in Toys.Toys that have been made in other countries and then imported into the United States, or antique toys or collectibles passed down through generations; often contain lead that puts children at risk for such exposure. To reduce these risks, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issues recalls of toys that could potentially expose children to lead. Learn more about preventing lead exposure.

Lead may be used in two aspects of toy manufacturing.

* Paint: Lead may be in the paint on toys. It was banned in house paint, on products marketed to children, and in dishes and cookware in the United States in 1978. However, lead is still widely used in other countries and therefore can be found on imported toys. Lead may also be found on toys made in the United States before the ban.
* Plastic: While regulated, the use of lead in plastics has not been banned in the United States. It softens and stabilizes the plastic; however, when the plastic is exposed to substances such as sunlight, air, and detergents, the plastic breaks down and may form a lead dust.

How can I test a toy for lead?

Only a certified laboratory can accurately test a toy for lead. Although do-it-yourself kits are available, they do not indicate how much lead is present, and their reliability at detecting low levels of lead has not been determined.
What should I do if I am concerned about my child’s exposure to lead?

If you suspect that your child has been exposed to a toy containing lead, remove the toy immediately. The only way to tell if your child has been exposed to lead is to have the child’s blood tested. Your health care provider can advise whether such a test is needed and also can recommend treatment if your child has been exposed to lead.
Lead in Toy Jewelry

If jewelry containing lead is swallowed or put in a child’s mouth, the child can be poisoned.
What should I do if I believe my child has put lead jewelry in their mouth?

See your health care provider. He or she can perform a blood test to see whether your child has been exposed to lead and recommend treatment if necessary. Most children with elevated blood-lead levels do not have any symptoms. However, there is no safe level of lead in blood. As blood-lead levels increase, a larger effect on children’s learning and behavior will occur. A blood-lead test is the only way to know if your child has an elevated lead level.
What are the effects of wearing toy jewelry?

Just wearing toy jewelry that contains lead will not cause your child to have a high level of lead in their blood. However, small children often put things in their mouth. You should make sure that all children in your household do not have access to jewelry or other items that may contain lead.

Lax security at Park Square 1, Ayala Center, Makati
On November 17, 2010. Said building was identified as owned by Ayala Land. The guard at an entrance to said building didn't inspect my luggage/didn't subject said
luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms. While I was in said building I went to InfoMax store and
obtained a list of prices of products. I have said list.

Lax security on November 17, 2010 at entrance to Bank of the Philippine Islands Midland Plaza branch. The guard at said entrance didn't inspect my luggage
and didn't subject said luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms.

Lax security on November 17, 2010 at Sta. Monica entrance to Robinsons Place Manila. The guard at said entrance didn't inspect my luggage/didn't subject
said luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms.

advisory vs. SM Makati
at Ayala Center 17, 2010. I entered the SM Makati building through the street entrance to the food court.The guard at said entrance didn't inspect my luggage/didn't subject said luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms. While I was at said food court, I saw an employee delivering forks and spoons to the restaurants in said area. Said spoons and forks were in an open container on a cart type device with rollers/wheels. Said employee pushed said device with a hand and then without sanitizing said hand, held said forks and spoons with said unsanitized bare hand and then distributed them to a store named Tokyo Tokyo. So the germs from said unsanitized hand could have transferred to said spoons and forks. While I was at said food court, there was only a comfort room for women.

After leaving said food court, I proceeded with said uninspected luggage to SM Department store and SM supermarket in the same building. No one at entrances to said stores inspected or subjected said luggage to scanning with metal detector. I have proof that I submitted a written complaint at said SM Department store vs an
employee working at said store. Said employee was identified as "Verna". While I was at said store, I discovered that a compartment at the men's comfort room on the
second floor of said store had no lock. I have proofs of purchases on November 17, 2010 from the following stores at said building: SM department store, SM
supermarket, Chow King restaurant.

Lax security on November 21, 2010 at second level entrance to the Landmark building at Ayala Center, Makati. The entrance was from Power Books store.While I was in
the Landmark building I bought groceries from the Landmark supermarket.
Then, from the Landmark building, lax security at entrance to Glorietta Building. The guard at the entrance to said building didn't inspect my waist bag or subject said bag to scanning with metal detector. Said guard also didn't scan my boots.I bought food from McDonalds store.Then I went to the Park Square I building. The guard at said entrance didn't inspect my waist bag, which was big enough to contain firearm. I bought product from mobile experts store and was issued sales invoice No. 21348.Then from Park Square 1,I went to the SM Makati building. The guard at entrance to said building didn't inspect my waist bag and didn't scan said bag with metal detector. Then I entered SM Department store. Nobody at the entrance to said store inspected said waist bag or subjected said bag to scanning with metal detector.

Advisory vs. Metro Club at Makati. On November 23, 2010, no one at the entrance to said club inspected my luggage/no one at said entrance subjected said luggage
to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms. At what was identified as the coffee shop in said building, there
was no prominent display of information regarding the privileges of/for senior citizens. I believe the management of said club violated a rule or regulation of
the Expanded Senior Citizen Act of 2003.The person(s) who served me didn't have displayed at the proper location on their clothing the health certificate. Regarding
the swimming pool at the property of said club. I saw at least two persons who used said pool without first showering with soap and water. So whatever dirt, etc.
they had on their bodies could have been transferred to said pool.

SM ignored DTI
I have a letter identified as from the Department of Trade and Industry Bureau of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection dated 19, 2010 and addressed
to Mr. Ricky Lim, Sr. Vice President for Controllership, SM Retail Inc., SM Corporate Office, Bldg. D, J.W. Diokno Blvd. Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, Said letter is regarding SM Appliance Center. As of this writing, there are SM Appliance Center stores in different parts of the country. Up to November 28, 2010, nobody
from SM has communicated with me regarding said letter.

Advisory vs. Burger King restaurant at SM City Manila. Said restaurant was identified as owned and operated by: Perf Restaurants, Inc., UGF SM City Manila,
Concepcion St., cor. Arroceros & San Marcelino Sts. Brgy. Ermita, Manila. On November 25, 2010, an employee at said restaurant sold to me food. Evidence is sales
invoice No. 3490. Said invoice was issued to me by an employee working at said store. Said employee was identified as "Edith". While I was at said restaurant, there
was no visible Express lane for senior citizens. There also was no prominent display of information in said store regarding privileges of/for senior citizens.
I believe a rule/regulation of the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003 was violated by the owner/operator of said store. The employee who served me didn't have displayed a health certificate at the proper position on the clothing she was wearing. Before I was issued said invoice, I was issued an invoice wherein the space below the words "Received the above goods in good order and condition" were already filed in not by me the customer but by an employee working at said store. So, if I wanted to complain, I could no longer complain.

Lax security on November 25, 2010 at rear entrance to Manila city hall.Nobody at said entrance inspected my luggage or subjected said luggage to scanning with
metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms. I delivered a letter to the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs inside said building.

warning vs. Bruno's Barbers
Based on a letter identified as from the Makati central post office and dated 31 May 2010, my registered letter No. 2971 addressed to Brunos Barbers Power Plant
Rockwell, Makati, was received on May 14, 2010 by said entity's agent. Said letter contained a request for information regarding the services offered by said entity.
Up to November 10, 2010, said entity has not provided me with said requested information.

vs. Rustan's will she help them?

said luggage to scanning with metal detector.Said luggage was large enough to contain firearms.After I entered said store, I bought goods and I received a sales invoice
with SN:41-x9492. Said store didn't prominently display information regarding privileges for senior citizens.I believe the management of said store violated
the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003.

I bought an extension cord at Handyman store at Robinsons Place,Ermita,Manila. Said product was identified as imported from China. There was no visible name and address of the importer of said product. I believe the
management of said store violated the Consumer Act of the Philippines. The guard at the entrance to said store didn't inspect my luggage or subject
said luggage to scanning with metal detector.Said luggage was large enough to contain firearms. I was issued a sales invoice No. 004520. Said store didn't
prominently display information regarding privileges for senior citizens.I believe the management of said store violated the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003.

DTI ignored by the Landmark Corporation?
I have a letter identified as from the Department of Trade and Industry and and dated May 15, 2009 and addressed to the store manager the Landmark Ayala Center, Makati City. Said letter contains the words: "This refers to the complaint . . . relative to the security and sanitary concerns in your building. On November 13, 2010,
advisory vs. SM Megamall & Shangri-La Plaza
On November 13, 2010, I experienced lax security at entrances to said buildings. The guard at entrance to the SM Supermarket at SM Megamall didn't open
my luggage/didn't subject said luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms. I reported said security lapse
to persons identified as Mandaluyong police personnel, but they didn't take down details of said security lapse. After entering said mall, I ordered from a Jollibee
restaurant. I have proof of purchase. I entered Shangri-La Plaza through the Rustans supermarket. The guard at the street entrance to said store. The guard at said
entrance didn't inspect my luggage/didn't subject said luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms.
After entering said store, I purchased food from said store. Proof of purchase is Rustans supermarket sales invoice No. 008951.From said restaurant, I went to other
parts of said building without said luggage being inspected or being subjected to scanning with metal detector.

BFAD; DTI, subjects of customer complaints accepted by CSC
Evidence that my said complaints were accepted by the Civil Service Commission are:
(1) a letter identified as from said CSC and dated October 4, 2010 and addressed to said Bureau of Food and Drug.; (2) a letter identified as from said CSC and
addressed to said DTI. Said letter was dated Oct. 4, 2010 and was addressed to Secretary Gregory L. Domingo of the DTI. Up to November 13, 2010, no one from said
BFAD or said DTI has provided me with a reply re said CSC letter.

Civil Service Commission ignored by Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin Abalos, Jr.?
Based on evidence, a "Maria Luisa Salonga-Agamata, Director IV Public Assistance and Information Office Civil Service Commission" wrote a letter addressed to said
mayor and dated December 15, 2009 and regarding ADI-Asianic Distributors, which was in Mandaluyong.
Said letter contained the following words: "We refer, for information and appropriate action, the . . . attached letters dated November 14, 21 and 22, 2009 of M.
Silva relative to the . . . inaction by that Office on the letters-complaint against ADI-Asianic Distributors, Inc. We will appreciate your preferential attention in
the matter. Please advise M. Silva . . . of the action taken thereon." Despite said letter from the said Commission, up to November 13, 2010, said Mayor has not
provided me with any information as to what, if any, he took regarding said complaint. I have other evidence vs. said Abalos, Jr., who was identified as the President
of the League of Cities of the Philippines. Does the Mandaluyong government consider security lapses at private entities in Mandaluyong as of no concern to it? Has
said Mayor done what he was supposed to do regarding the Enhanced Senior Citizens Act of 2003?

luggage/subject said luggage to scanning with metal detector. Said luggage was large enough to contain grenades and firearms. Said entrance was beside Mercury Drug
store. After entering said building, I bought food from what was identified as McDonald's Glorietta 3. I was given an
official receipt dated 14/10/2010 and numbered 000400498681.
The employee at said McDonald's didn't have a health certificate attached at the proper position on the clothing he was wearing. In addition, said employee, who
received the money I paid and who wasn't wearing gloves, proceeded to handle the container for the food I ordered without first sanitizing his hands. So the germs
from the money he received could have transferred to said food container.

Got Mice? Seal, Trap, and Clean Up to Control Rodents
http://www.cdc.gov/Features/Rodents/

Rodents may enter your home for food or shelter. Seal up holes or gaps in your home, trap any existing rodents, and clean up any sources of food or water and items that might provide shelter for them.

Mice and rats are pesky critters that can enter your home through small holes or gaps. Mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a nickel, and rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a half quarter!

Worldwide, rats and mice are the cause of over 35 diseases!If rodents invade your home here are a few steps to protect yourself and your family.
Rats! What To Do about Rodents!

If you find signs of rodents or their droppings in your home, take precautions to clean up the area safely.

* Seal up holes or gaps in your home to prevent rodents from returning.
Mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a nickel, and rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a half dollar! Prevent rodents from entering the home by checking inside and outside the house for gaps or holes.

Where to look for gaps or holes inside your home

* Inside, under, and behind kitchen cabinets, refrigerators and stoves.
* Inside closets near the floor corners.
* Around the fireplace.
* Around doors.
* Around the pipes under sinks and washing machines.
* Around the pipes going to hot water heaters and furnaces.
* Around floor vents and dryer vents.
* Inside the attic.

* In the basement or crawl space.
* In the basement and laundry room floor drains.
* Between the floor and wall juncture.

Where to look for gaps or holes outside your home

* In the roof among the rafters, gables, and eaves.
* Around windows.
* Around doors.
* Around the foundation
* Attic vents and crawl space vents.
* Under doors.
* Around holes for electrical, plumbing, cable, and gas lines.

Fill small holes with steel wool. Put caulk around the steel wool to keep it in place. Use lath screen or lath metal, cement, hardware cloth, or metal sheeting to fix large holes. These materials can be found at your local hardware store. Fix gaps in trailer skirtings and use flashing around the base of the house. If you do not remember to seal up entry holes in your home, rodents will continue to get inside. Outbuildings and garages should also be sealed to prevent the entrance of rodents.

* Page last reviewed: July 29, 2010
* Page last updated: July 29, 2010

* Trap rodents in and around your home using an appropriate snap trap.

Trap rodents around the home to help reduce the rodent population

Choose an appropriate snap trap. Traps for catching mice are different from those for catching rats. Carefully read the instructions before setting the trap.

When setting the trap, place a small amount of peanut butter (approximately the size of a pea) on the bait pan of the snap trap. Position the bait end of the trap next to the wall so it forms a "T" with the wall. Rodents prefer to run next to walls or other objects for safety and do not being out in the open.

In attics, basements, and crawlspaces and other areas that do not have regular human traffic, set traps in any area where there is evidence of frequent rodent activity. Some rodents, particularly rats, are very cautious and several days may pass before they approach the traps. Other rodents, such as house mice and deer mice, are less cautious and may be trapped more quickly.

We do not recommend using glue traps or live traps. These traps can scare mice that are caught live and cause them to urinate. Since their urine may contain germs, this may increase your risk of being exposed to diseases.

Also place traps in outbuildings and in areas that might likely serve as rodent shelters. Natural rodent predators, such as non-poisonous snakes, owls, and hawks, may also help control and reduce the number of rodents outside the home.

If you trap inside your home, but do not seal up rodent entry holes, new rodents will enter the dwelling. For information on how to seal up holes inside and outside the home, please see the Seal Up! page.

* Clean up any sources of food or water, and items that might provide shelter for rodents.
Clean up rodent food sources and nesting sites
various food containers with properly sealed lids

Keep food in thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids.

Prevent contact with rodents by cleaning up your home, workplace, or campsite.
Eliminate possible rodent food sources

* Keep food in thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids.
* Clean up spilled food right away and wash dishes and cooking utensils soon after use.
* Keep outside cooking areas and grills clean.
* Always put pet food away after use and do not leave pet-food or water bowls out overnight.
* Keep bird feeders away from the house and utilize squirrel guards to limit access to the feeder by squirrels and other rodents.
* Use a thick plastic or metal garbage can with a tight lid.
* Keep compost bins as far away from the house as possible (100 feet or more is best).
* Keep grains and animal feed in thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids. In the evening, uneaten animal feed should be returned to containers with lids.

If storing trash and food waste inside the home, do so in rodent-proof containers, and frequently clean the containers with soap and water. Dispose of trash and garbage on a frequent and regular basis, and pick up or eliminate clutter.

Eliminate possible nesting sites outside the home. Elevate hay, woodpiles, and garbage cans at least 1 foot off the ground. Move woodpiles far away from the house (100 feet or more is best). Get rid of old trucks, cars, and old tires that mice and rats could use as homes. Keep grass cut short and shrubbery within 100 feet of the home well trimmed.

Got Mice? Seal, Trap, and Clean Up to Control Rodents
http://www.cdc.gov/Features/Rodents/

Rodents may enter your home for food or shelter. Seal up holes or gaps in your home, trap any existing rodents, and
clean up any sources of food or water and items that might provide shelter for them.

Mice and rats are pesky critters that can enter your home through small holes or gaps. Mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a nickel, and rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a half quarter!

Worldwide, rats and mice are the cause of over 35 diseases! In the United States, rodents can spread diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, rat-bite fever, leptospirosis, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, a virus that poses a particular risk for pregnant women. If rodents invade your home this fall or winter, here are a few steps to protect yourself and your family.

* Around the fireplace.
* Around doors.
* Around the pipes under sinks and washing machines.
* Around the pipes going to hot water heaters and furnaces.
* Around floor vents and dryer vents.
* Inside the attic.
* In the basement or crawl space.
* In the basement and laundry room floor drains.
* Between the floor and wall juncture.

Where to look for gaps or holes outside your home

* In the roof among the rafters, gables, and eaves.
* Around windows.
* Around doors.
* Around the foundation
* Attic vents and crawl space vents.
* Under doors.

* Trap rodents in and around your home using an appropriate snap trap.

Trap rodents around the home to help reduce the rodent population

Baiting a snap trap with peanut butter.

Position a snap trap so it forms a "T" with the wall.
